The Next Century of Service

After 60 years in the same North Portland warehouse, we are in need of a new home.

Just over a decade ago, we were providing emergency food assistance to about 5,000 families a year from our warehouse on North Thompson Street. That number skyrocketed exponentially.

Between record inflation, the COVID-19 pandemic and cutting of emergency SNAP benefits in March 2023, we’re meeting a need that is 1700% greater than it was in 2010. Last year, we served 90,000+ local households — the most in our 100-year history.

The only way we’ve been able to manage up to this point is through the generosity of our partner Albertsons Safeway. They have kindly allowed us the temporary use of a warehouse space in a vacant grocery store in Wilsonville.

The only way we’ve been able to manage up to this point is through the generosity of our partner Albertsons Safeway. They have kindly allowed us the use of warehousespace in a vacant grocery store in Wilsonville.

This has been a temporary solution and our lease is coming to an end. We’ve long outgrown our antiquated warehouse in North Portland and
the rate of growth we’re experiencing is not sustainable for this old building. With your help, we will secure a new home for Sunshine Division to continue the work we started a century ago.

Factors contributing to the rise in need have included record inflation, the COVID-19 pandemic and the cutting of emergency SNAP benefits statewide.

A Sound Investment

Charity Navigator has awarded Sunshine Division a 4-out-of-4-star rating 10 consecutive years for our fiscal transparency and efficiency.

Sunshine Division is the only hunger-relief organization in Oregon that has received this prestigious designation. Only two other nonprofits statewide — and 3% of nonprofits nationwide — have earned this exceptional rating for 10 years straight.

Portland Business Journal ranked Sunshine Division on Top 50 list of nonprofits in the Portland metro area. We are the organization with fewer than 20 employees to make that list.
