Help Us Cross the Finish Line

Sunshine Division is moving into a permanent new headquarters on NW Front Ave near downtown Portland. The space will allow us to store more food, welcome more volunteers, and serve more families and individuals without reliable food access. With more than 70% of our $11.75 million goal already raised, we need your help to secure the final $3.5 million so we can open fully funded and ready to serve on June 1.

OUR CAMPAIGN PROGRESS

Funding the Future

With your support, we’ve moved on from our North Thompson Street warehouse, an aging facility that we’ve called home for over 50 years. While we’ve begun settling into our new headquarters, we still need funding to:

  • Complete construction of new food pantry & volunteer center
  • Finalize the move from our temporary Wilsonville warehouse
  • Purchase equipment for the warehouse
  • Stock the racking in our new facility with food

TAKE A LOOK INSIDE

The New Space

Sunshine Division’s new headquarters will help ensure more neighbors in the Portland metro area have food on the table when they need it most. With the capacity to store 140% more food, we’ll be able to reach more families, respond more quickly during times of need, and provide consistent, reliable support for our community for decades to come.

The Exterior

The new headquarters is located at 2121 NW Front Ave near the heart of the city. With ample parking and close proximity to public transit, this facility will be what Sunshine Division needs to continue to meet the rapid growth in need our community is experiencing.

Front Entrance

The front doors of our new headquarters lead directly to the lobby of our food pantry, where we will welcome neighbors and fulfill food pantry requests. We’ve added an awning near the entrance where volunteers and staff will bring food directly to those who need it.

Food Pantry Lobby

This is where Sunshine Division will welcome hundreds of guests each week to provide essential groceries for households with little to no access to nutritious food.

Front Desk

Each pantry visitor will walk up to the front desk to request the food items they need for their household. The amount of food Sunshine Division distributes is based on the number of people in a household.

Pantry Fulfillment Area

This is where volunteers and staff will fulfill food pantry orders before bringing essential groceries outside for each pantry visitor.

Warehouse Space

This 20,000-square-foot warehouse will replace the vacant grocery store in Wilsonville that has served as Sunshine Division’s temporary food distribution center since 2020.

Volunteer Center

The Bud Lewis Volunteer Center will be Sunshine Division’s first designated volunteer space. It will be a communal space where volunteers can gather, socialize, and participate in events.

OUR VISION FOR THE FUTURE

The New Space

Sunshine Division’s future headquarters is located on Northwest Front Street near downtown Portland. It will include a brand-new food pantry, 20,000 sq ft of warehouse space, loading docks, and room for expansion.

The Campaign

Sunshine Division Executive Director Kyle Camberg & Safeway Albertsons Director of Communications Jill McGinnis talk about the Next Century of Service Campaign in this short video.

Growing to Meet the Need

Generations of families have known Sunshine Division as a place Portlanders can turn for food assistance. From the Great Depression to the 2008 recession to the COVID-19 pandemic and recent cuts to SNAP benefits, we have continued to serve our community.

For more than a century, we have stepped up to meet the need.

Over the past decade, the number of people coming to Sunshine Division for food has grown fourfold, and demand continues to rise.

Since 2020, Safeway Albertsons has generously allowed us to warehouse and distribute food from a vacant grocery store space in Wilsonville. This temporary, rent-free solution allowed us to continue serving the community while preparing to leave our aging warehouse facility on North Thompson Street.

We are deeply grateful for Safeway Albertsons’ support. But the Wilsonville location, located far from our Portland programs, was never meant to be a long-term solution.

Growing to Meet the Need

Sunshine Division’s food assistance programs have worked tirelessly to support the Portland metro community through wave after wave of challenges—from inflation and the lasting impacts of the pandemic to reductions in SNAP benefits and cost of living increases.

We’re stepping up every day to meet the growing need.

In recent years, we’ve made major strides to expand our impact:

  • In 2017, we opened our Southeast Stark Street food pantry
  • In 2020, we launched a weekly free home-delivery program
  • In 2021, we started our MLK Jr. Holiday program, distributing food boxes to 3,000 families
  • In 2023, we expanded our holiday food distribution events to serve more than 9,000 families per year
  • In 2024, we launched our Thanksgiving home delivery program, bringing a hearty Turkey meal to the doorstep of 2,000 local families
  • In 2025, we extended hours at Stark food pantry and expanded our home-delivery program.

Since 2020, we’ve relied on a temporary warehousing solution that has allowed us to meet the exponential growth in demand for our services. Thanks to the generosity of Safeway Albertsons, we’ve operated out of a vacant donated grocery store space. But this interim solution was not sustainable.

Our new headquarters will allow us to meet the growing needs of Portland families today and for the next 100 years.

What’s Next

Our new headquarters marks the beginning of a stronger, more efficient future for Sunshine Division’s hunger relief programs.

For the first time in nearly a decade, our food pantry, warehouse, volunteer operations, and administrative teams will operate from one centralized Portland location. This allows us to move food faster, store more of it, and serve more families with dignity and consistency.

What This Means for the Community

More food available year-round: With more than 20,000 square feet of warehouse space and a 140% increase in food storage capacity, we will be able to keep our shelves stocked and respond quickly when community needs surge.

Faster food distribution: A centralized facility with multiple loading docks and efficient warehouse layout allows our team to receive, pack, and distribute food more quickly to families and community partners.

Expanded pantry services: Our new 10,000-square-foot pantry and volunteer space will allow us to serve hundreds of visitors each week while providing a welcoming and dignified experience.

Better access for families: Located in Portland and accessible by public transportation, the new facility makes it easier for families and community partners to reach us.

Our Southeast Stark Street pantry will remain open, and Sunshine Division emergency food boxes will continue to be available 24/7 at all Portland Police precincts, ensuring families across the city can access food when they need it most.

We are transforming the warehouse into Sunshine Division’s new fulfillment center, replacing our temporary solution in Wilsonville provided by Safeway Albertsons since 2020.

Volunteers packing food into food boxes

We designed the building will include a new food pantry, warehouse space, a designated volunteer area, and administrative offices.

With the community’s support, we’ve already been able to move into the facility and relaunch our home-delivery program at the new warehouse. But we still need to raise about $3.5 million to complete this project, fully funded and ready to serve.

“The partnership between Portland Police Bureau and Sunshine Division is invaluable in our mission to serve and protect our community. Together, we work tirelessly to provide vital resources and support to those in need, addressing not only immediate safety concerns but also the pressing issue of food insecurity. As our community’s needs have grown, so has the demand for Sunshine Division’s services. It’s become increasingly evident that they require a new, expanded facility to accommodate this growth and continue to meet the rising demand for their essential services. By combining our efforts and supporting the Sunshine Division’s expansion, we can foster a stronger and safer environment for all, ensuring that no one in our community goes hungry or without the critical support they need.
