PORTLAND, Ore. — Sunshine Division opened a new Free Food Market at its headquarters near Slabtown on Tuesday, June 9, expanding access to free groceries for families and individuals across the Portland metro area.

The new location comes as demand for food assistance remains at historic levels. The Free Food Market allows visitors to select groceries that best fit their households’ dietary needs, cultural preferences, and personal tastes.

The opening also marked the return of the Free Food Market model at Sunshine Division’s Southeast Portland location, located at 12436 SE Stark St. As of Monday, June 8, both locations have returned to a market-style format, giving guests greater choice and flexibility when accessing food assistance.

Visitors will be able to select from a variety of fresh produce, dairy products, proteins, pantry staples, and other available grocery items during scheduled appointments.

“Food assistance isn’t one-size-fits-all,” said Kyle Camberg, Executive Director of Sunshine Division. “Our Free Food Market model allows families to choose the foods that work best for their households while creating a more welcoming and dignified experience.”

Appointments are required to visit the Free Food Market and can be scheduled at sunshinedivision.org/appointments. Guests will be asked to present a valid ID and meet at least one of the program’s eligibility criteria. No one will be turned away for not having an ID.

The new Free Food Market is part of Sunshine Division’s broader effort to meet growing community need. In May 2026, the Southeast Stark location served approximately 1,600 households, while more than 2,000 households received food through the weekly home delivery program.

Located within Sunshine Division’s new 30,000-square-foot headquarters, the space includes a volunteer center, expanded warehouse operations, administrative offices, and increased storage capacity. These improvements will help Sunshine Division distribute food more efficiently and serve more households for decades to come.

Sunshine Division has raised more than $9 million toward its $11.75 million Next Century of Service campaign goal. Community members can learn more about the project or make a contribution at sunshinedivision.org/next-century.
