Skate free this weekend at Lloyd Center Ice Rink!
This Saturday and Sunday, May 17-18, skate from noon till 2 p.m. for only
6 cans of donated food per skater. It even includes skate rental!
Can Skate! is part of this month's Can-Do Canned Food Drive to benefit Sunshine Division. We're aiming to collect 20,000 pounds of canned and nonperishable food in order to replenish our shelves.
"For the last few months we've been distributing from
50 to 115 percent more food than last year at this
time," explained our operations manager Maryanne Dehner.
"Which means even with record-breaking food drives
during last winter, there remains an urgent need for
us to collect still more food—because more Portland
families are getting hit by the daily realities of
economic recession."
You Can-Do attitude can help us help hungry Portlanders in these ways:
- Sponsor a food
drive at your business, club, church, school, or
organization. It's never too late.
We'll supply you with collection
barrels, we'll pick up full ones and replace
them with empties, we'll provide you with printed
info about Sunshine Division and Portland's hungry—even
send you a speaker if you want.
- Donate food.
Whether your donations of nonperishable food come
from your pantry, or you buy extra while you're
shopping, here's what we're looking for to keep
our food boxes nutritious, especially for children:
- Breakfast cereal (both dry and hot)
- Foods high in protein (tuna, peanut butter,
etc.)
- Whole-grain pasta
- Canned veggies and fruit
- Baby food, formula
…plus some nonfood products that there's much need for:- Baby diapers
- Toilet tissue
- Hygiene products
